Matt set out on an adventure to experience a vegan diet in his home country, Uganda. There are many blogs and articles about experiences of vegetarians and vegans in Uganda; however, these are mainly experiences of tourists or people that have lived shortly in the country. What is the real experience of being a vegan as a native living in Uganda? This question springs from a thought that as much as there are some Ugandans that have been vegans or vegetarians their entire lives, there are some others that attempt adopt these lifestyles for numerous reasons.
A vegetarian is someone that does not eat meat for moral, religion or health reasons while a vegan is one who does not consume any animal product. Unlike a vegan, a vegetarian has an option to eat other animal products apart from meat like eggs, milk, cheese, ice cream, yoghurt and much more. However, both a vegetarian or vegan diet is recommended by some nutritionists, doctors, environmentalists and spiritualists. These diets are associated with good health, mindfulness of the environment, compassion for animal lives and spiritual fulfilment.
Both vegetarians and vegans rely partially and totally, respectively, on high consumption of plant-based products. Uganda is a country blessed with a favourable climate and fertile soils that support a variety of plant life. Apart from the fact that Uganda can provide a wide range of plant-based foods-legumes, fruits, vegetables, grains, and much more, it is also blessed with many ethnic tribes that prepare and serve these foods differently. This variety has been enhanced by foreigners that have settled within the country and introduced more cuisines. It can be presumed that that living within a large ‘plant based food basket’ with a number of plant-based cuisines makes Uganda a vegetarian or vegan paradise.
We have started Vegan Awareness Campaigns in Uganda to Awaken the General public about the importance of living a vegan lifestyle.
We do this through mobilizing the general public using public address systems as missionaries did in 1990s and when they gather together, we share the good news about living a vegan lifestyle.
These campaigns need a budget to make the message about Veganism reach the grassroots. Therefore we're calling all kind, compassionate, vegan organizations/individuals and development partners to support this activity by donating funds to make it successful.
Our organization started in (2019) and we are committed to spreading awareness about the benefits of veganism and advocating for a plant-based lifestyle. Not just as a dietary choice, but as a conscious decision that aligns with our commitment to compassion, health, and sustainability.
Founded in 2019 and legally registered in June 2021 as vegan Network Uganda; the Uganda Vegan Society is a movement of Vegans all over Uganda. This community’s main goal is to introduce veganism in Uganda as a better way of living.

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is a semi-autonomous government agency that conserves and manages Uganda’s wildlife for the people of Uganda and the whole world. UWA is mandated to ensure sustainable management of wildlife resources and supervise wildlife activities in Uganda both within and outside the protected areas.
